It looks like the digest is fixed. I'm hesitant to say that
because every time I do, it break in a new, exciting, and totally
illogical way.

	Ah well.

Thanks to those of you who mailed me "Good luck on fixing the
digest, and thanks for the service notes". The mail gods smiled
favorably on those notes and allowed the digest to work once again
(for now). =^]

	Ta da.

There is a list that is floating around showing
what the different settings of sbos to use
with different games. The list
gives the impression that sbos supports most or all
of these games perfectly well. However, I have been
having trouble with the sbos and digital audio.

First, the digital audio portion does not work correctly in
Front Page Sports Football while playing on the field.
During the introduction, the digital audio sounds
great but during play it repeats itself (e.g., "f-f-f-first down").
I talked to Dynamix about the problem and they
said that they had been receiving a lot of calls
concerning the GUS and because of this they planned
to make an upgrade so that sbos would work or
write a driver for native GUS support.
You can get the sound to work in the adlib mode
but it sounds horrible and the graphics stop
every time they are emitted.

Second, the digital audio does not work in Siege even
with the -x3 option. I get the message
on load up that the digital audio failed to load.
(This wouldn't be a memory problem with the GUS would it?).
Once again, you can get the adlib mode to work fine.

I hope this isn't a problem with my computer only.
The digital audio worked fine in the introductions
of Ulitma Underworld and FPS Football. Anyone
got any of these games to work okay?

Hello,

Glad to see the digest back. I was kind of worried about loosing
the most valuable source of information about the GUS.
I tried to connect to archive.epas.utoronto.ca all weekend but I
always receive a "unknown host" message. It worked before. What
happened? Another site crashed? :-)

According to the list someone posted, sbos is suppose to work fine for
Front Page Sports Football. It doesn't for me. I have an AMI Enterprise II
EISA motherboard running a 486DX50.

sbos actually works acceptably for most games including Falcon 3.0 and
Links386, however I have a problem with it and Front Page Sports Football.
All of the digities sounds are echoed. For example, when the ref says
"First Down" it comes out "FfffiiiirrrrssstttDdddddoooowwwwwnnnnnn".

I tried using sbos with various parms with no luck. Does anyone have any
ideas? Thanks.

While doing some Christmas shopping this weekend, I stumbled upon
three (3) GUS's sitting on the shelf at BIZMART in Austin, TX ($139.99).
Although the GUS WAS on my Christmas list, I couldn't pass it up
:-) :-) :-)

Subject: GUS Memory map - help anyone?
To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

I purchased and installed a GUS in my 486/50 (NOT DX2) ISA-based machine
(AMI BIOS, ETEQ chipset) this weekend. I accepted all the defaults and
everything seemed okay. I have a question, though, regarding the memory
map. Yes, I AM calling Gravis today to discuss with them, but since I
haven't seen this topic explored on the list I thought I'd go ahead and
introduce/share it with all.

Like I said, I accepted all the defaults so my card installed at location
220. In the manual the memory map is described as:

UltraSound's Port locations are spread out through the PC's I/O map....
Here is a brief map....so you can find a base port location that
   will not interfere....

   Joystick -- 200/201 <----- yes, I AM using it

The rest of the ports are based off the base port...The "X" represents
   0-F hexadecimal.

   2X8-2XC -- Ad Lib/Sound Blaster
   388, 389 -- Ad Lib
   3X0-3X1 -- MIDI interface
   2X2-3X2 -- GF1
   2X0, 2XD, 2XE -- GF1

Now just WHAT does this all mean? How do you use these numbers with
the base port? They're not described as offsets. When the doc says
the "X" represents 0-F hexadecimal, is one supposed to SUBSTITUTE
ALL hex values, OR just one depending on the base port? For example,
is the documentation stating that for:

   2X8-2XC (Ad Lib/Sound Blaster)

the following address ranges:

208-20C (note substitution of hex value 0 for middle nibble)
218-21C (note substitution of hex value 1 for middle nibble)
228-22C (note substitution of hex value 2 for middle nibble)
238-23C (note substitution of hex value 3 for middle nibble)
248-24C (note substitution of hex value 4 for middle nibble)
258-25C (note substitution of hex value 5 for middle nibble)
268-26C (note substitution of hex value 6 for middle nibble)
278-27C (note substitution of hex value 7 for middle nibble)
288-28C (note substitution of hex value 8 for middle nibble)
298-29C (note substitution of hex value 9 for middle nibble)
2A8-2AC (note substitution of hex value A for middle nibble)
2B8-2BC (note substitution of hex value B for middle nibble)
2C8-2CC (note substitution of hex value C for middle nibble)
2D8-2DC (note substitution of hex value D for middle nibble)
2E8-2EC (note substitution of hex value E for middle nibble)
2F8-2FC (note substitution of hex value F for middle nibble)

ARE all used by the card? Or, are you supposed to substitute the missing
nibble with a value from the base port? For example, since I installed
at base 220, should I ONLY replace the "X" with a "2" so that:

   2X8-2XC (Ad Lib/Sound Blaster)

ONLY uses the address range:

   228-22C (Ad Lib/Sound Blaster)

for my particular setup?

Thanks to all in advance (forgive the pun),

I have a Gravis Ultrasound and I would like
to start composing and playing music with it.
I am a completely ignorant as to what equipment
or software that I will need. I suppose
that I would need a MIDI keyboard but I have
no idea about what type I should get.
What do you need the keyboard to do that the GUS cannot do?
I would be extremely grateful for any advise
or directions to FAQs existing out there that could help me.
Thanks for your patience.

Someone asked about playing individual patches a few digests back. I
can't remember the exact letter.

Anyway, I was playing with some of the stuff I downloaded from Epas (now
that I have some time) and I came across a program called KbMidi. It's
for windows and lets you play all the notes for each individual
instrument. It does all the instuments seperately (hence it plays
indidual .pat files I assume) so that you can get a good feel for the
instrument.
