There have been a few changes in the way FTP works for all the
GUS stuff:

1] The area on epas.utoronto.ca has been moved to
archive.epas.utoronto.ca. You may have trouble finding that site, as
the name is still propagating out through the internet.

2] We have a new FTP site: wuarchive.wustl.edu. As many of
you know, this site is mirrored to many other sites, and well as just
mounting its disks all over the internet, so hopefully it will be
easier for you to get to this stuff.

3] The two sites (epas & wuarchive) will be identical to each
other, except for the fact that ONLY archive.epas.utoronto.ca will
accept uploads into its submit directory. (Please submit!)

4] Major thanks to Thomas Wong and Adam Iles for getting these
sites set up and maintained. It's a nasty, thankless job (except they
get all the programs first!), but they do it anyway. A BIGHAND.SND
for both of them. (Sorry, bad joke.)

Here is the README file that is currently on both sites.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Yes, we have been having some problems down here. As a
result, the digests have been acting weird for the past few days.

First, our link to the internet went away for the weekend,
resulting in two digests (1200 mail messages :) getting queued up
behind the dead box. Then the digest machine bit the big one (you
"old timers" remember the %itchy thing?)...

And all during finals, a big crunch at work, and at the same
time I finally got my GUS (covered in a different message).

In any case, it should be up and working now.

BTW: For those of you who are saving up digests, I've decided
that I'm going to increment the volume number and reset the # counter
every quarter (better subdivision in the ftp sites, we can tar
together volumes that are older than 2 quarters).

So, expect V2 #1 around the beginning of January, and V3 #1
around the beginning of April, etc, etc.

I read a question about whether the GUS will work on an EISA

and it runs perfectly. I've had no hardware problems at all.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Hi all,

I talked to the fine folks at Advanced Gravis today.

They are beta testing a new set of Windows drivers that supposedly
*include working MIDI IN*! The will be going out to beta test folks
around the country (or world I guess) soon - like within a week.
Time to get chummy with your local beta tester! ;-)

Also, they are compiling a new set of General MIDI patches that will
replace the existing patches we have. These have a new kind of
header, and I suppose they will be different (maybe better where
needed?) than the existing patch set.

Unfortunately, Gravis' MIDI connector box won't be out until January.
<Big sigh>. Of course, there are other connector boxes out there.
The guy I talked with (I'm so bad with names) said that it might be
better to get the Media Lab (is that what he called it? I left my notes
at home. Media something) box instead of the Creative Labs box.
Hmmmm. Gravis is trying to get their MIDI box together in time to
show it off at the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchandisers?)
show in mid-January. This is a good sign - they have enough faith
in the Ultrasound to take it to a trade show where Joe Blow can
hobnob with the likes of Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, etc. Could
get some nice exposure!

If anybody can clarify any of my babblings, feel free to do so.

Also, if a Channing Corn reads this digest (or someone who knows
him), drop me a line - ken@austin.ibm.com.

Well, I hope this is the way to reply to the mail-server.
I guess I'll hear it soon enough.

I have a Gateway 486 33 EISA and have no MAJOR problems running the GUS.

Starcon II kicks butt like usual, and even SBOS seems to work
descently. I have some problems with WING-COMM_2, but have yet
to really give it a try.

The GUS and EISA seem to be very happy together, so I'd suggest trading
in the OLD OPTI ISA board and going for the EISA.

Just my 2 cents,

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Well, I finally went out and bought a GUS. (I didn't even
know they were in stock in this town, but a friend of mine on the list
got one and told me about it. Thanks, Brian!) Yeah, I know, bad
example for the person running the list to not have a card until now,
but that's life.

(Of course, I got it just as finals started at school, which
means my grades for this quarter have been completely shot to hell.
But that's ok, 'cause I've got a GUS! :)

Now that I've played with it a little (most of the time was
spent installing it, only about 2 hours of play time on it so far,
sorry! :), I have a couple of comments for various people out there:

To the guy who is maintaing the list of games and their SBOS
switches: Will you please consider adding other things to your list
besides games? For instance, I'd rather avoid reading all the back
issues of the digest to find the correct SBOS switch for WOWII or GTS
or MODPLAY or MODEDIT or... you get the idea. :)

To people who have various demos, utilities, applications,
etc., running on their GUS: Will you all please repost how you got the
programs working (SBOS, driver massaging, what animals to sacrifice)
so the info can be added to the above-mentioned list?

To whoever has a good working knowledge of USS8: I know this
program has problems, but is there a way to AT LEAST sample to the
GUS' memory, instead of going down the bus to the hard drive? Blech!
You'd think that Gravis would use their own on-board resources when
possible!

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Good Morning All,

I could wait no longer. I went and bought a GUS. It is a great improvement
over my previous PAS. It is lacking in software, however, and hence, this
posting.

I am in search of a MIDI sequencer that will work with GUS. I hear
WinJammer will do the trick (after a bit of fondling to get the patches loaded
correctly). Are there any other shareware alternatives? Also, I have no
FTP access (i can only send and receive mail, I can't remotely logon all
over the world like some of you), so how can I get a hold of these
programs?

Finally, are there good commercial sequencers available? I've heard
Cakewalk Pro for Windows is supposed to be spiffy. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help,

What is the reason that SBOS and Windows do not mix? My system is
frequently used by my offspring to play games and I haven't reached the
point where I can trust my 4 year old to exit windows and invoke a
specific batch file to start a game. Even my 10 year old is somewhat
disgusted with the mechanics of starting up the particular game he wants.

On the other hand, the crowd around the machine was highly entertained
when After Dark triggered Creepy Night on top of one of the midi demo files.

Finally, I have yet to find a setting that will let Super Solvers
Ancient Adventures produce its music track.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

I might have a problem with a program called "Galactix".
I have version 1.0B by the way.

When I play it with sbos 1.22( no parameters) it is DAM slow.

I am using DMA #6 and even with no memory managers in the computer it
stops every time an explosion occurs or extra noise. The background sounds
don't seem to stop the graphics, but when the ship is hit--stop goes the
display. It is somewhat jerky on my 25Mhz 486DX without any sound, but
still annoying. But with the SBOS install-- Noise-noise-stop-noise-stop.
It is a pain to play.

Did I do something wrong?? Do I have a slow version of Galactix. The
games list says that no parameters are used, but it also says ver. 1.3.

I got it from ulowell at the end of last month. Is there a new version??

That is all.

Either post here or send me E-mail.

Happy GUSSING!!!! Don't let the SBProian's bite!!!

Ok...Here's a quick question for all of you. I have had my ultrasound
now for over a month and I have been collecting software left and right.
I came to the point where I was almost running out of space on my HD.
I decided to then install SuperStor Pro on my 486/50Mhz. At first
everything seemed ok. I ran a couple of my usual games using SBOS 1.22
and everything seemed ok. I then tried WC2 and I got not enough
memory. (I'm going to try loading SBOS high and see if that is enough)

My question stems to the fact that when I try to run Starcon II, my
comuter *TOTALLY* crashes! I end up cold booting it. Before I
had SuperStor Pro on my HD, everything worked ok.

Do I need to reinstall the ultrasound software? Has anyone gotten
the ultrasound to work in native mode with Superstor Pro?
(BTW windows apps still work fine)

Oh...I just remembered...when I try flidemo or mididemo, I get an
error saying error -6- or something like that?!? (and it does
nothing)

Any help would be much appreciated!

I've used the CDROM audio in on the GUS and am happy to report that it
works flawlessly on my system. The pins are Left signal, left ground,
right ground, and right signal. I don't know which side is left and which
is right, but you can just try playing something on one side or the other
to see if you have it backwards. I ordered a cable for the CDROM from
their company, but I had to build the GUS side from scratch. I couldn't
find an adapter for the GUS, but with a little creativity I got one hacked
together.

And I've been seeing a lot of stuff about OPTi chipsets recently. I had
my motherboard replaced a few weeks ago and my new chipset is OPTi
82c391/392. Since I've gotten the new motherboard, I've had no problems.
Also, I've seen people saying that some things work and some don't. I
narrowed down the problems I was having to one. SBOS wouldn't play
digitized sound. Everything else worked fine. So for those of you who
have said that playmidi, flidemo, etc. worked fine, you might have
problems but don't notice them because of this. Don't assume that since
most things work it isn't a big deal. That is unless you can do without
digitized sounds from SBOS.
