O.K. This is the last one... I promise! I had been waiting patiently for my GUS,
but no more. Mike from EA(Electronic A**holes for those few misinformed) called me last Tuesday to say that my GUS was in, they were packaging it, and it would be out the door by Wed.(I was supposed to get it by Mon. at the latest). So, of course I got all excited. EA, you see, had upgraded me to overnight delivery for free because I had called and bitched so much. Well, I figured, overnight from Wed., even with Thanksgiving on Thur., I should see my board by Sat. at the latest. Silly me, I forgot I was dealing with Electronic A**holes. Tue. morning, and still no board, so I give Mike a call. He apologizes and all, but it seems they didn't send the boards out until Mon., AND THEY SHIPPED MINE GROUND MAIL!!!!!!
Damnit....EA appeased me before by giving me free overnight shipping, only to screw me over by taking it away......(Here Mikeeeeee, bend over and grab your ankles, we're gonna clean out your pipes for ya)
Well, maybe I'm losing my patience a little bit, and please excuse the ensuing vulgarities, but FUCK EA. They've screwed me over one time too many times. If anyone out there has direct connections to EA, please relate my feelings. I'm not about to "wait during the silence" anymore, only to find out that they've reamed me yet again.

I hope this makes it to the list.

I finally got my GUS today from Telemart. I put the 1 meg upgrade on.

Everything installed okay, but whenever I play a MIDI file, I get
a lot of popping throughout playback. It'll play a file real softly then
pop into full volume and then go soft again. My GUS came with v1.21 disks,
is there anything newer yet?

USS8 is a joke. Is USS10 any better?

I have a program called Music Time for Win 3.1 It's a sheet music MIDI
program. Because of the GUS patch screwups, I can't get it to work.
Has anyone been able to around the problem? I think it's the same thing
affecting cakewalk and cadenza.

Can anyone recommend sbos settings for the follwing?

Dune
Might and Magic 4
Wizardry 7
Eye of the Beholder I and II

Thanks in advance,

Erik

Hi all,

I imported a couple of GUS cards into South Africa for myself and
some friends. I've been testing the cards on my machine and have come
to a nasty conclusion.

[Flame On]

"ALL GUS CARDS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL!!!"

For instance, my card has a rich full sound. Another card that I
tested sounds thin and lacking in quality. For instance in the
occasional MID file which produces a bit of static now and again, it
will produce alot more static on one card then on another.

Not only this but one card will crash my machine when I use the setup
program, while another card won't. Why is this? Surely the
circuitry on the cards is exactly the same? Or is one card just badly
assembled???

[Flame Off]

Anyway that is enough of the negative stuff, its just that I feel
that quality is very important in a new product if its going to be
successful.

Otherwise I'm very happy with my GUS. I just bought Starcon II and it
is awesome. Can somebody please tell me how to make it work correctly
on a 1 Meg card??? And how about a crack. The map is looking old
already!

Ciao,
Irmin

Seeing as I've been waiting over a month for telemart ( they are polite but
dont seem to have any stock :-) ) and there seem to be a lot of them available
in Canada because they are made there can someone give me a credit card order
number for a reliable source in Canada that does international orders?

The price isnt that crucial because the price in the UK is 175 pounds= $264 US

Failing that any computer shops in Edmonton that have GUSes in stock would be
okay as my flatmates folks live there- although I'd have to muck about a bit
sending them cash etc etc

I have downloade MODEDIT 3.1 from wuarchive some time back, but I have
never gotten it to work. I run the program, then opened the House of the
Rising Sun demo file that came with it. All I got was squeaky noise from
the PC speaker and nothing from the GUS audio outlets. I also recalled
someone saying in the GUS digest some time back that the GUS does not
work with MODEDIT 3.1 but it does with 2.0. Is this true? Hmm...I am
already beginning to feel pretty handicapped with the soundcard. Seems
like there is so much tweaking and adjusting to do. I still can't get
UNREAL to work (setting MIDI IRQ to 2 and trying SBOS -o1 thru -o3 as
somone suggested didn't work). ARGH!! Help!

Someone wrote in with a list of games that sounded great, including
Monkey Island II. However, they also said that the Inca Demo had
excellent music. Hmmm...

Can anyone tell me how good the Monkey Island II music sounds, compared
with the Roland card. I heard this on a friend's setup a while back and
it sounded real good.

Is anyone else getting nervous about support for the GUS. I've received
mail from both Sierra and LucasArts that say they will not be supporting
the GUS. LucasArts didn't rule out future support, but said not any time
soon.

Whether you play their games or not, these are two major game developers
and I think it's important that they are showing little if any interest in
the GUS. Even Gravis doesn't seem to be excited about their card - I've
never seen an ad for the GUS and would have never even heard about it if
not for c.s.i.p.soundcard newsgroup.

I'm waiting for the UPS guy to bring my GUS to the door, but I'm getting
concerned that the GUS is not being received by the industry as well as by
the people who have bought it. Star Control II was probably the deciding
point for me to buy the card because I saw it as a sign that game companies
were behind the GUS, but that feeling has dissipated. SCII is still the
only game I have seen that has GUS support. Has EA said anything about GUS
support? I've never seen this mythical Chuck Yeager special GUS edition.
I will continue to make companies aware that I want GUS support in their
games, but I'm not convinced that this card will be the new standard.

I would suggest that GUS owners drop a note to game developers lobbying for
GUS support.

  Sierra BBS # is 1-209-683-4463
LucasArts can be e-mailed at 75300.454@compuserve.com
I also have the following number for Origin BBS, but haven't tried it
yet: 1-512-328-8402 (This is an old number and I don't know if it is
still valid, I'll try it tonight)

Also, if anyone would like to send me addresses (e-mail and snail mail) and
BBS #'s of game developers, as well as what they have said about the GUS,
I'll compile a list and upload it to the FTP site and send it to the
request server. (I feel like such a subversive ;)

Later,
Ted.
