Some of you may have noticed a missing digest in here
somewhere... the one from 11/27/92, I think. Well, sometime during
the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the machines vital to running the
digest went down, and consequently all of the queued messages for that
day got lost in the ether.

I'm fixing things so that kind of thing won't happen again
(consolidating all processes and files to one machine, checking for
this kind of error before processing the digest, etc., etc.), but that
doesn't get back those old messages... sorry!

Please repost what you sent if you don't see it in any recent
digests. Thanks.

Has anybody successfully used a 16-bit DMA (i.e., channel 4-7) in their
configuration? Also, is there a utility available that will show me
what port addresses I have available.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

In a previous posting, someone suggested that the reason some MIDI
songs won't sound right in WinJammer or Cakewalk is that these
programs do not load the patches in while Microsoft's Media Player
does, so that if you try loading the song in Media Player, quit it,
then load the same song in Cakewalk or Winjammer then it'll sound
right. I don't find this to be always true. I have included a
uuencoded file, cheers.mid, below. It does not sound complete at all
in Media Player (no Cheers lead melody is heard) but it 'sounds' ok
with Playmidi at the DOS prompt. However, with the latter, I get the
message:

warning: couldn't find program 85 to put on channel 1

But regardless of the message I still can recognize the Cheers theme
-- it sounds complete. Why is Media Player not loading all the
patches right with this .MID file? Can those gurus out there please
comment? Chris Yuzik please say something about this....

-Tim
