Yes it does work with Maximum Overkill. Try "SBOS -O3".
You'll get adlib music. It sounds horrible but it works.

> I am trying WinMod Pro, with an amiga MOD file.
> The mod file is read in successfully, and plays but I get no sound.
> Does anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong?

I've tried Winmod 1.0, works fine. With Winmod Pro, you can't
use stereo. Other mod players tested by me that work are:

WowII v1.30 at the highest mixing speed
Visual Player v1.0 at the highest mixing speed
Modplay v2.19B with only himem.sys and default mixing speed
TrakBlaster 1.4
WOW 2.01s had to lower mixing speed
GTS .091

That's it. WowII and Visual Player are the best. Visual
Player can be found on the ftp site wuarchive.wustl.edu in the
pub/MSDOS_UPLOADS as vp10.zip I believe.

It's going to be commercial software. It probably will not hit the market
until Fall '93. There will be a demonstration version released during the
summer. We've also got a standard MOD player in the works, probably out in
3 or 4 months. That will be shareware.

I have uploaded the first of a serie of beattles songs. (I am the walrus)
It has a .cfg file which is much needed since it was done on a non general
midi or GS synth. Some patch would need better instrumentation. Particularly
in the lead synth instruments where the GUS has none.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Hi, I asked earlier about why about three-quarters of the percussion
instruments in Petzold's Midi Drum machine program wouldn't produce any
sounds on my GUS. Well, I upgraded the GUS today to 1 Meg. Cost me
$37.80 (including tax) for the 6 DRAMs. They were 256K types, 70 ns
and not 100 ns as recommended in the GUS manual. Apparently anything at
100 ns or BETTER will work.

I have a question. I am running the Cakewalk demo from wuarchive.
It is sorta 'unpredictable' as to when it can and cannot play a .MID file
(or a .WRK file for that matter). Sometimes, when I try to play a
.MID file it would play only one or maybe two of the instruments in the
song, notably the bass/drums. I would then quit Cakewalk, run Microsoft's
Media Player and have it play the same .MID file for a second or two.
I would then quit the Media Player and rerun Cakewalk. This time it runs
properly...that is, it plays the same .MID file when a while ago it couldn't.
This phenomenon happens when I run WinJammer as well. Why is this?

When our game was cut short by a nasty electrical storm, EA was going for the
win....well, the refs made a correction to an earlier call(my 2 month old Gravis
order - that was supposed to take another 2 weeks- came 3 dayts later...) and
awarded Gravis another point. (What's the score now anyway? I've lost track)

Anyway, get to the point......Mike from EA called me today(Tue. 1:30 pm) to tell
me that they had their cards, and they were being packaged as we spoke!!!!
With Thanksgiving coming up, however, he didn't think I'd get it before
Monday :-( He did tell me that this was all of their expected shipment..so
everyone else that's been waiting...they should be on their way!

Ok, so now I'm anxiously waiting by my mailbox again.....

Looks like it's gonna be a tie game(although I'm still frustrated with both
companies).

BTW: Get ready for lots of stupid questions as I try to get it to work in my
machine!

No quotes today....gotta get out to my mailbox!

Next time I run PlayMidi WhatSong, that particular message

assigned to a .PAT name.

The GUS couldn't find program 188 and he (the guy who wrote this) added a

Where does that 118 number come from? Is it supposed to be 188? Can

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Hi all,

Finally GUS arrived in Holland, I got mine yesterday from Logitech.

Now I had planned to kick out my Sound Blaster Pro (what ever they mean
by that), but I had some problems running the GUS with Flight Simulator 4
with the Sound & Graphics upgrade. Running SBOS it creates the correct sound
but an additional something anoying is added.

I have tried all SBOS options and yet can't get it to work properly. Now my
question is if there is anybody who got it running for him. If anybody else
had problems with this as well then please inform me about this as well.

If the problem can't be resolved then I'll just have to wast a Slot and keep
in the SB.

Another thing, a while ago I read about off board parity errors, I forgot what
caused them but I am very interested in this because I had a message implicating
this yesterday. It happened while recording with USS8.

I presume the high bus speed (16 MHz) caused it, but I'm not sure. My machine
is a 486/33 with 8 megs ISA.

Thanks for any replies,

Alwin

Now that I have a GUS on order and it is being shipped as we speak, I was
wondering if the SB or for that matter any other card can coexist with
the GUS? I've heard people that have successfully have done so. And someone
said that a rep or whatever at AG actually has a GUS, SB Pro, and a Roland
coexisting happily despite the warning in the manual. So what's the scoop?
Can say a SB be used in conjunction with a GUS to take advantage of the
SB's ability to use SB supported software? Any input will be appreciated.

Just curious, when is the last time anyone has received a reply from
a question they sent to Chris Yuzik? (And how long before that did
you send the question?) I sent him some mail 4 or 5 days ago, but
I have yet to hear from him, so I figure either:

a) he is no longer replying to email.
b) he has a huge backlog of messages, and it'll take him a while to
	get to mine.
c) he is waiting for one of the techs to come up with a solution to
	my problem.

There were some conflicting reports a little while back as to whether
his email address was chris_yuzik@sfu.ca or yuzik@sfu.ca, so I sent
the message to both (and neither has bounced so far). Are these
addresses still valid?

What's the typical "turnaround time" for getting answers from him?

Hi,
I'm redesigning (ouch!) from scratch the cable layout. It will be in
gif format on epas.utoronto.ca and also available from the request server
probably friday. It will incorporate midi in, midi thru, midi outs (2),
2 joysticks and midi cable design. Since the first one has not worked for
me (it did for the original designer), i'll take a second look at this.

BTW, the cable is the Sound Blaster cable, not the Pro. It is really
expensive from Creative Labs.

If anyone has made a working cable, email me asap.

Tomorrow I'm going to call Telemart and cancel my order for a Gravis Ultrasound
(GUS), because I picked one up at Babbage's today. That's right! I actually
got one at a national US chain. Neat, huh? (The price, for those that are
curious is $149.99)

Anyway, I plugged the board in, installed the software and it worked! Just
like that. I forgot to copy the MIDIMAP.CFG file, so my Windows was screwy
until I fixed that (they really should put something in the docs to make sure
you do it). Anyway, the thing sounds great! SBOS works ok, and I haven't tried
the other stuff yet. Hopefully, I will get the new software for free. We'll
just see...

And Gravis answered the 16 bit thing with the windows driver like that:

Nope, not really, Sandy. Guess again. I tought he worked for Gravis...

The cfg is needed again due to the non general midi or GS format. Also

Now, when we'll have some real patches, i'll jump into techno and rave

BTW, acker-gs is not bad at all. It just lack some lead synth (hey, gravis,

:) Well kids, bad news. Maximum Overkill won't work with the GUS.
:) You can still play the game, but you won't get any sound because
:) the program won't allow any TSR's in memory (I keep getting an NMI
:) error) whenever I have the sbos loaded. I tried loading them high,
:) then the machine/game locks up.
:)
:) Of course you need 4Meg of ram to run the game and its a "frightfully
:) good" game/piece of software. I think this one should win awards if
:) anything does this year.

Umm... I do believe the game won't work with an expanded memory manager, thus
loading things high won't solve the problem. I've managed to get the GUS
working with Maximum Overkill using the -o3 option. Clean autoexec and
config files - no mouse, no smartdrv; just himem.sys; and 4Mb RAM. Funny
thing is, the first time it always gives me the NMI error, but if you run
Max Overkill immediately after that, the game will run.

Can't say I like the sound on this game though. The rockets sound more like
an organ than anything.
:)
:) Unfortunately, I will be returning it due to the lack of sound
:) (no sound effects through the pc speaker, just 'lame' music)
:)
:) It would be nice if a game like this had direct support for the GUS,
:) because then maybe they cound cut down on the memory requirements.
:) (ie Download 1 meg of sound to the gus and maybe it only needs 3 Meg to
:) run)
:)
:) PS I upgraded my GUS to 1 Meg. It cost me $3 a chip, about $19 inc tax.
:) I did it through Pixel Computer on Tully Road in San Jose (70ns), Fry's
:) and CompUSA wanted ~$5 a chip.

Again, if I recall correctly, the Audio Master is only 12-bit. It doesn't
make sense to make a card have 16-bit playback if it can only record

hmmmm.. this worries me, so in a game or something, we can only have a limit
of one meg of samples to play a tune of some sort in any number of voices,
and if we want to play a tune with different instruments, the music has to
stop to load up different patches? What happens to midi files that select
different instruments half way thru a piece? such as a flute section
suddenly cutting into a main piece etc...??

Can a patch be loaded to one channel while another channel is playing simultaneously?

Ive read the GUS can sample and playback at the same time, could this be used
to do the trick?

I tried running the Unreal demo with my GUS. I first ran sbos
and then ran unreal. Then I selected Soundblaster 8Mhz. When the demo
begins, I hear a number of bleeps and then an unintelligible male voice.
(for 2 seconds or so.) Then it's total silence for the rest of the demo.
What's wrong? Not enough RAM on my GUS? Sorry, I am sure this question
must have been addressed a while back in the digest, but I am sure
one of you must have a ready answer. :)

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Hi, Folks!

Well, quite often, I wanted to be able to play my sound files on my GUS
without having to load SBOS all the time. (I run SBOS only when I want to
play games.)

So I wrote this program, called PL.
It's a small (i.e. quick & dirty) program that extracts sampling rate
information from the sound files (currently it only does WAV and VOC files)
and calls PLAYFILE (that comes with GUS).

For example, I just unzipped all my WAV and VOC file in a directory
and did "PL *.*" to hear all 100 of them one after another without
SBOS in the memory.

The only problem is that there are these annoying clicks at the beginning
and end of the sound files because PLAYFILE does not filter out extra
info in the sound files.

I hope you don't mind me putting this here. It's about 10 pages long.
Anyway, here is PL v1.0 uuencoded.

Oh, yeah, where is GUS Development kit? I'm dying to do some programming
on it!

Ryan

Hi there,
The window driver has only 8 bits, mono 22KHz implemented. This is very
frustrating. I discovered that with BC++3.1. Also the midi part of this
driver seems to have only 12 channels not 16 (and how do we get 32 mono?).

I also tried WAVE by Turtle beach and it doesn't work with the GUS driver.
I have not figured out why. It says unsupported format.

Now, if you add all this to the fact that most windows software don't do
patch loading, i think that the driver is in deep need of amelioration.

Now, we want 16 bits, 44KHz, stereo. 16 channels. Pload. MIDI IN (i
almost forgot). I have expressed my concerns on Gravis BBS also, so that
puts more pressure on them.

Ciao,
