My LMSI drive package came with the Advanced Gravis UltraSound audio
card with the attached daughterboard (CD-ROM drive interface). After
spending one hour reading the manual, setup booklet, and
the "readme" file, I plugged it all in, turn on the power and
zapped, my CMOS setup for the HARD-DISK (a 125 MB) is reset. Okay, no
problem, I thought, I dugged up my old hard-disk manual and put in
the codes again. And this time, the CD-ROM LED drive indicator did not
light. I checked all my cables, wiring, etc. but to no avail even
when booting the machine for several times.

Anyone who is reading this newsgroup heard of this CD-ROM or own one?
If you have overcome the installation problem, please help me. My
email address is c580503@mizzou1.missouri.edu.

Also, I think this is a very good package (if I could only get it to work)
as it came with 2 CD's and a soundboard for $399. The LMSI drive claimed
to have an access time of 370 ms.

Thank you in advance.

Subject: Game won't work/USS8/Wolf 3-D
To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Hi all,

Well, I finally got a game not to work with SBOS - Conan the Cimmerian.
Oh, the intro works fine, with sound, but the game won't ever start!
I think I have too much crap running in lower memory, so I may try that
tonight. It jsut never goes into the game. The music plays to a blank screen.

I got USS 8 working! (I had written it didn't work.) I did manage to lock
it up several times though - one way is to select "Undo" when you
haven't done anything yet (!) and the other was inserting a sound
and not specifying the right file (SND). You'd think it would be a little
more fault tolerant than that, though!

Last, Wolf 3-D is starting to lose sounds. The doors, speech, and guns
gradually seem to go away sometimes. I am using the -o2 parameter, BTW.
Anyone else had this happen, or fixed it? I think I read a note on this...

On to other games. Anyone gotten Star Control II yet? Or Chuck Yager?
I may get one of them just for GUS support. Does anyone know if any
game companies are "retroactively" supporting the GUS - that is, will,
say, Origin write a sound driver for Wing Commander/Ultima/etc anytime
soon? That would be optimal! We need to "bother" people to do this.

When are new drivers/MIDI patch loader/etc coming out from Gravis?

Ken

Well, according to Alan in tech support, they got the BBS up last night,
although uploads are NOT allowed at this point. The number is 604-431-1807.
He said there isn't much on it yet, but he's big into samplers and
keyboards in general (it's why he joined Gravis; to work on the GUS using
his knowledge of samplers) and he wants to put some MIDI stuff on the BBS.
So, it's happenin'

He also mentioned that he's got a SoundBlaster Pro, an GUS and a Roland
SCC-1 all in his machine co-existing happily, although he was told that
such a setup might be "hard on the SoundBlaster's hardware." But he's been
doing it since August with no explosions...

As for OS/2, he said they and Forte are "looking at it" and that a 3rd
party was writing a shareware SoundBlaster emulator driver for OS/2. I'm
not sure what this means, exactly, but there it is...

Okay guys. I finally dragged back in the GOOD version with ALL files that I had
stashed at home. They are being uploaded to wuarchive.wustl.edu into the
/pub/MSDOS_UPLOADS directory as we speak.

This also includes all text files and the GTSSAM7.ZIP that was missing from
before along with a complete version of GTSSAM3.ZIP.

Have fun and don't make a big mess! :-)

Cheers

A friend and I just got our GUS cards last night. We both
installed them no problem. We just accepted our default settings and
everything worked just fine. The software that came with the card is
version 1.21. I'm not sure what version is on the UToronto site, but if
I've got something newer just let me know and I'll post my copy.
I tried the SBOS with a couple of games and here's the result:
(1) Castle Wolfenstein: worked great! no problems at all.
(2) Galactix: (shareware game) music worked fine, but the sound effects
caused the game to pause while the sound was played and then continued.
This made the game nearlly unplayable. You can get the music on the GUS
and sound effects on the PC speaker by picking adlib in the game setup.
The game doesn't pause if you just play the music.
(3) Stellar7: Music and sound effects worked fine during the main
battle part of the game, but between screens, when Lord Whats-his-face
is suposed to talk it chitters and the sounds become uniteligable. At
first I though something must have blown something because it really
sounded bad. I don't know what the problem is, any ideas? Also the few
words I could make out didn't sound quite right because I don't think
this big evil dude is susposed to sound like a chipmunk! :-)
(4) Golden Axe: Music works just fine, but all the sound effects come
from the PC speaker. I don't think this is a GUS problem though, I
think it's the game itself.

Well, that's all for now. I plan to try out both Wing
Commanders today and anything else I can get a hold of. I'll post my
results in a latter issue.

Does anyone have the pin outs for the joystick connector on the GUS? I've
looked at the request MIDI port note and it doesn't have all the information
to build the dual joystick ports. If anyone has more info on this, please
send it to the Digest.

Well, I was having similar problems. I think it was because
of my Adaptec 1542B and SCSI HD. Don't know if they will help
but here are my settings:

GF1 IRQ = 15, MIDI IRQ = 5, DMA = 7, BASE PORT 220.

The SCSI HA was using 11. This solved my setup program from
hanging but some software installations still hang. I used to
be able to play dune but now can't run the setup since I added
a 486 and a SCSI HD to my system.

Anyways Good Luck

Sounds like IRQ conflicts. I get both music and sfx with
Ramparts.

I did. You might also notice that the mid files included in
the 1.21 don't have individual cfg files like version 1.1
did. Maybe they didn't change the patches. I haven't tried
it yet but try copying your old cfg files to that directory if
you still have them.

> Who uploaded those "updates/patches" onto epas anyways? Are
> we sure this is a legit release since 1) there are problems
> that the old ones didn't

Well, someone uploaded them from cardz bbs. It is still
incomplete. You get more patches, a newer version of SBOS,
and an extra windows driver. There may be more changes but I
haven't noted. Oh, ya, a more extensive readme file too. I
found most of the new patches sound better, one or two a
little worse. Also I can't get SBOS to work with classic
tetris anymore

I even found that GUS works with Galactix 1.3A with the -o2
option. The readme states you can only get music no sfx.
Haa!

HAS ANYONE HAD SUCCESS IN GETTING THE UNREAL DEMO TO WORK WITH
THE GUS?

I got vectordemo to work on my gus on irq 2 on my 286 but I
think the SCSI adapter I have now takes this up because I
can't get vectordemo to detect irq 2. Haven't gotten Unreal
to work but it could be due to the same problem.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Hello Mr. Yuzik,
I received a call from my computer store yesterday telling me
that the GUS I ordered had arrived. But in the 2 weeks it took to come, I read
in the GUS Digest that there was no driver for Windows on a 286, so I canceled
the order. Why would I buy a card that does not work fully with my system? I
want to do some music writing under windows and your competitors offer cards
that work already on my 286. So my questions are:

_When_ will you release Standard mode drivers?
Why must your driver work only in 386 Enhanced mode?

Depending on your answer, I might consider buying GUS, but be sure that I wont
buy this card before the drivers are released.

Hmm.. Did you tried running ULTRINIT before you run the game?? or
are you running a memory manager?? Maybe that can attribute to the
problem...

I doubt that is the problem since both hardware revisions are
identical...
