There were a couple people who mentioned that they had
problems requesting certain files and not others (they couldn't get
three-midi or undigest). It turns out I was stupid (surprise! :) and
had permission on those files set wrong.

	Mo.

So, they're fixed now. Feel free to request them if you want
them.

I've posted the following to usenet comp.sys.ibm.soundcard, but I'm not sure how
much these lists overlap, so sorry if there are duplicates:

Gravis Ultrasound Questions:

1. I gather that the GUS is sort of a sample player, but with the samples
stored in RAM that is writable from the PC. Ok...how do they deal with:

1a. MIDI patch change commands? (Does the application have to load
the GUS RAM itself? Not too nice if it is just a standard MIDI
application that knows nothing about such things

1b. Attacks? (Is there a separate RAM area for the attack for a
particular sound that does not get looped back on?)

2. What MIDI commands are supported?

3. What sort of sysex commands are there?

4. Does the GUS synth have some sort of semi-standard programming interface?
In other words, could I expect Cakewalk or some other DOS program to have a
driver to run the synth without having to use the Sound Blaster TSR?

5. Does the GUS synth conform to General Midi?

6. Does someone have some specs they can post?

I guess that is enough for now. If someone can answer all these, feel free
to them as the basis for a FAQ.

Thanks!

Burns

Does anyone have a straight answer from Gravis/(insert your favorite distrib.
here.) on when the card will be availible? I called Gavis' 1-800 number a
few times and was assured that the cards were shipping as we spoke.
However Chips & Bits (which BTW is selling the ultrasound for $129.) says
they won't be in for another TWO WEEKS! Does anyone know what the problem
really is? it is a supply problem? Are the cards actually being produced?
If so, where are they going?

I have a friend from Boston who is now visiting Canada. How much does
a GUS cost there? I mean in a regular store, not from Gravis directly
since their prices are higher. Please let me know ASAP so that if
it's really cheap, I will ask my friend to buy it for me in Canada.

Hi,

I'm having problems getting my new GUS card to work with OS/2 2.0, and
would appreciate any tips from those who have succesfully installed
the sound card.

In the setup program, AFTER all the files are copied to the
c:\ultrasnd directory (and decompressed), the program crashes the
entire system. I figure that the software looks at all the IRQs, and
does other naughty things, so I proceeded to copy the setup program to
a floppy disk, and run the program from a DOS boot (i.e. restart
system without OS/2). The setup from DOS (choosing IRQs, etc.) seems
to go fine (I can hear the sound FX!), so I made note of the various
settings, and altered my autoexec.bat file accordingly (for OS/2).

I've set up the card to avoid IRQ conflicts. Following p.22 of the GUS
maual, my base address is 220, DMA channels are 07, GF1 IRQ is 15, and
MIDI IRQ is 2. Using 9 as my MIDI irq yields the same results as using
2 (all other IRQs below 7 are in use). I've played around with
different DMA channels, but that doesn't seem to be the problem.

(The following is all from within an OS/2 DOS BOX -- I assume a plain
dos session (from a floppy - no OS/2) would work fine.)

The midi stuff works. The SBOS driver works. The joystick
programs work.

The ultrafli demo doesn't work. AUDIO <TSR> won't install. The
playdigi won't work (it needs AUDIO). USS8 doesn't work. Playfile
works occasionally, but then usually gives a SYS3176 error (see below).

For the programs that don't work, here are the only error messages
I've seen:

a) SYS2237 - no math coprocessor (this only appears for USS8)
b) SYS3176 - illegal 386 instruction attempted, program can't continue
(this message appears for all the programs that don't work, about 80%
of the time)
c) "The system detected an internal processing error at location
##0160:fffa2855 - 000d:00048855. 60000, 7014 (Int. Rev. 6.412)
d) same as c) but location 0160:fff6452b - a52b

c) and d) happened very sporadically, and may be an actual OS/2 bug
(might be fixed under latest CSD -- I haven't installed the latest CSD
yet). However, problems a) and b) seem to be more serious. Is Gravis
using their own memory manager, or doing something else to cause the
above problems??

For anyone who has successfully installed the card under OS/2, please
post how you did it.

Thanks in advance,

George

P.S. Here's my setup: 386-33 (no math coprocessor), 8MB RAM, only CSD
applied was to fix the "non-shrinking swapper.dat" problem.

This message appeared under my name in UDD #12. I didn't write this,
nor - of course - does it reflect my opinions. Either someone with a
retarded imagination is trying to be funny, or there's some error
somewhere. Just to set the records right.

I have created a directory (/pub/pc/ultrasound/submit) for submissions
to the anonymous ftp server. You should be able to upload files to
this directory and then send e-mail to ftp@epas.utoronto.ca describing
the upload. DO NOT use the "/upload" directory, since it's intended
for our users private use, and no one monitors the directory.

> I'm about to send it on wuarchive under the name MIDIS.ARJ and I already
> posted it on Usenet.

Please feel free to upload it to epas.utoronto.ca and I'll make it
available for others to download. If you have any further problems
please send me e-mail directly.
