But, media player won't produce any sound. I configured my ultrasound driver in th in

the fact that I have never had a sound card before, and an imperfect

I think I need to make an Ultrasound Digest Owner FAQ.

Q1] I didn't get my digest last night. What's wrong?

A1] First of all, if no one mailed anything to the digest, you
won't get one. Also, because of the load of stuff going out
from this site, the digest may get delayed a few hours. (If
you haven't noticed, each digest is set with Precedence: Bulk
so that other more important things take priority in mail
	queues.)

Essentially, please don't complain to me if your digest doesn't
show up one day. If it's not there for two or three, then feel
	free to whine. =^)

Q2] How can I get a list of what is available on the request server?

A2] The request "help" (sans quotes) works. (Actually, any request
that is illegal works. If the server can't parse your
request, it will send the help file.)

Q3] Can you please send me back issues of the digest?

A3] NO! NO NO NO NO NO! I appreciate that all of you are really interested
in the digest. I'm thrilled, and I'll bet Gravis is too. But I
have a job and an education to take care of. As soon as the FTP
site is up, all the digests will be there. So will anything that
is on the request server. Grab any of them at your fancy.

For now, be happy getting your Daily Digest. :)

Yay! I hope that post from Chris Yuzik is true. I hope I get my Gravis from
EA next week. I've been waiting a VERY long time now.

Anyway, has anyone heard of the new SB coming out (SB16)? (Okay, so
this is the "Gravis Digest" Why am I bringing up the SB? Hold on...)
It's supposed to have a daughterboard add-on which will give it what
sounds like wave-table synthesis. There are several reasons I bring
this up. First, it seems I've been waiting for the Gravis so long,
that other card manufacturers have started "catching up" to Gravis'
technology (Not that the SB16 is coming out anytime soon, or it
even has this thingy.... (Please clear this up if it isn't true)).
(Yes, I'm one of those gotta have the newest best thing out there type)
I'm sure I'll be happy with the GUS, but I hope other soundcards don't
stomp it out before it can create its own niche. This brings me to
my second point. As far as I can tell, in the US, there has been NO
advertisements for the GUS. Why? How has everyone even learned of the
GUS? If it wasn't for Internet/Usenet, I would've never even heard of
this great new product. Don't you think it'd be wise to start hyping
the GUS, so it catches on and doesn't lose its own market? (Much like
the famed CompuCom, which was known to me only via BBSes, which
seems kind of useless, since people who call BBSes already have
modems...) You'd think a card like this with its price/performance ratio
would have a very nice mass appeal. OK, maybe they should wait until
they can actually supply them to those masses, but... Well, you get
my idea.

Lastly, I'm kind of curious. Just how many GUS's have been distributed
so far (Worldwide).

Wasn't someone working on a list of games, and what was necessary to get them

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

I would like to say something to all those people complaining about
shipping delays on the Gravis Ultrasound...

Has anyone considered that maybe Gravis just can't keep up with
the demand for this card. Everyone and their brother/sister is
complaining about 'Ohhhh, I have to wait another week for my
Ultrasound....' Too bad. Life's tough, isn't it???
It's not like Gravis produces hundreds of cards each day like some
other comanies do. It's the typical quality-quantity tradeoff:
If you want quality, you may have to wait.

Personally, I agree with Gravis' plan of releasing as many as they can
ASAP. This way, the customers are assured that yes, this card really
does exist, and yes, it is as good as promised. And, if you're lucky,
you'll get your card now. Whereas if Gravis waited another 6-8 weeks
to release it, everyone would have given up on the GUS, and there
wouldn't be any. Gravis was under a lot of pressure to produce
the card, and now that it's out, there's even more pressure because
everyone wants one NOW.

Flames are welcome. Send them to my account, not the newsgroup or
the mailing list. And to those also complaining about wasted band-
width: screw off. If we have to listen to you bitch about shipping
delays, then you need to listen to this.

Here are 34 midi files set up for the gs-midi standard, and hopefully
they should sound fine on GUS.

I have NOT YET RECEIVED my ULTRASOUND! I WANT IT! IWANT IT! I WANT IT!

(There - all ranting finished - I can continue.)

With the exception of a couple of sequences which I found in .rol file
format in a small shop in Seoul, Korea, everything in this collection
was entered by me from scratch - therefore, any problems are my fault!

These sequences are all 'TYPE 1', midifiles, that is, they consist of
multiple, polyphonic tracks, with the drum track (if any) on channel
10 (as per the gs spec). Besides the normal 'note' events, the sequences
almost all include tempo changes, and use of various midi-controllers
such as sostenuto, reverb, chorus, and portamento. They do NOT include
pitch-wheel events, as I'm unsure how GUS responds to these - for instance,
Creative Labs and Adlib divided a single semitone into 8192 parts, whereas
most of the 'serious' synths made by korg, ensoniq, and roland divide
a semitone into 4096 parts. Therefore I'm not sure whether I'd get a
full semitone or half a semitone if I had a pitch-wheel event of -4096.
Perhaps Chris could answer this one :-). Many of the sequences make use
of midi 'markers'. A midi 'marker' is a flag inside a midi file which is
associated with a particular time, and which may have text associated
with it. It was meant to be used so that someone building a multimedia
file could say 'start showing the animation at marker 3', or whatever.
I use it for lyrics. There is a 'lyric' event specified in midi, but no
sequencer that I'm aware of makes use of it. Cakewalk for Windows can show
these 'marker' events as the sequence is playing; if your sequencer does
not, you can use the debugger to read the file, or use Piet Von Oostrum's
'mf2t' program (see the archive address below) to translate a midi file
into readable ascii and then back to a midifile. If you have the un*x
command 'strings', you can use that as well.

These sequences have also been uploaded to Piet Von Oostrum's MIDI archive
on archive.cs.ruu.nl, and can be found in /pub/MIDI/SONGS as 'gsmidfil.zip'.

I have MANY midi files. These, here, tend to be of a 'classic' nature, but if
people are interested, perhaps sometime in the future I could post
some stuff more popularly oriented. I am currently working on editing
some oriental popular and folk tunes which I found on my last trip to
the Far East.

In any case, PLEASE send me feedback. Did you get them to work? Did they
sound all right? Have you made them better? Send me email.

Notes to some of the sequences:

barimyst.mid - This is Francois Couperin's "Les Barricades Myterieuses",
arranged for the classical banjo. This style of banjo playing is practiced
nowadays by only a few of us. If there is any interest, I have a great deal
of classical banjo music.

fairsun.mid, folsaint.mid, wanton.mid, whenthou.mid - These are Thomas Campion
songs from Philip Rossiter's "Books of Ayres" (1601-1603)

lostcord.mid - This is a late 19th century "parlor" song by Sir Arthur Sullivan,
of Gilbert and Sullivan fame. I have synchronized the words to the music
using markers, so that you can sing along.

deadmen.mid - This is a seventeenth century English drinking song, from
Chappel's "Music of the Olden Time". If anyone wants the words, I'd be
happy to supply them.

forelle.mid - Schubert's "Trout", transposed down (for my voice).

hana.mid japnmed.mid sakura2.mid soshunfu.mid yukifuru.mid - These are
Japanese "folk" songs. They were actually composed early this century, and
are learned by every Japanese schoolchild.

galuppi.mid johnblow.mid scararia.mid - I entered these baroque pieces in order
to play with ornamentation!

hngarian.mid stlouis.mid lindberg.mid rufsrsts.mid - Popular music from
earlier this century. Lenzburg's Hungarian Rag cleverly parodies Brahms;
Tom Turpin wrote St. Louis Rag; Rufus Rastus Johnson Brown was a typical
ragtime song from the first decade of the century; Lindbergh, the Eagle of the
USA has all the words in the markers so you can sing along.

leyenda.mid swwo30n1.mid vivconct.mid - A bit more serious "classical" music,
with more care taken when entering the sequences (Albeniz, Mendelssohn, and
Vivaldi).

mort.mid - An anonymous Renaissance setting of a poem by Francois Villon.

playford.mid - Dances from Playford's English Country Dance Master.

sunflowr.mid - Theme from the movie "Sunflower". Although popular when it
was made 35 years (or so) ago, I can now find it nowhere. Does anyone know
what happened to it?

jeuxdeau.mid sixiang.mid - These are two ".rol" files which I found in
Seoul, Korea in a small shop which made and sold Soundblaster clones. I
converted them to midi using Dan McKee's Winjammer program. By the way, I
said the jeuxdeau was by Liszt, and although Liszt wrote a Jeu d'Eau (fountain),
this one is by Ravel! (Sorry!)

I welcome any feedback, and would love to listen to any midi files
anyone on the net would care to send.

trying to protect its markets, it means we're out of luck as

I called Chris Yuzik at Gravis, and he confirmed that we're
pretty much at a deadend unless we could provide the name of a
distributor. He also wasn't surprised that Telemart wouldn't
give out the name of its distributor(s).

  *Sigh*

  The wait goes on...

I'm not sure who is to blame. My first reaction was also to vent my
frustration toward Gravis, and so I decided to give Gravis a call
(1-800-663-8558). The person who answered the phone transferred my
call to "Chris." I thought to myself, "Hmmm, `Chris'? As in Chris
Yuzik, the Gravis rep on Internet?" Sure enough, it was the same
 Chris!

Chris was not able to give me a date when the GUS would be delivered to
Telemart (1-800-521-1973) because Gravis doesn't ship directly to
retailers! Gravis is shipping to *distributors*, and thus we are
getting second-hand information from Telemart about the delivery date.

So, if Chris is correct, then Telemart is just blowing smoke when they
say that "Gravis has delayed again" because Gravis doesn't ship direct
to Telemart in the first place! To really get an accurate date of
delivery, we need to find out the name of the GUS distributor for
Telemart. Once we find that out, then we can call Gravis directly (be
sure to ask for Chris Yuzik ;-) and find out from the horse's mouth
when the fraggin' cards will be shipping!

If it's any consolation, Chris claims that all back-orders to their
distributors are projected to be filled by mid-December. This is from
the horse's mouth, and I'm holding Gravis to this date. The
information I received from Telemart is most likely just a retailer
 that is stringing us along.

It's up to the individual consumer. Personally, I'd feel much better
if I got a delivery date that I could believe. After talking with
Chris Yuzik I got a sense of where the production bottleneck is (anyone
who is involved in board manufacturing can appreciate this): Board
Testing. This, of course, is NOT an excuse, but at least it makes sense
to me, and I can live with the delay (at least for now).

But before you give up, give Gravis a call directly. Talk to Chris,
and mention that you're on Internet.

The order processing person I talked to at Telemart said November 12.
Telemart is merely slipping the ship date by a week each week. We
won't really know the ship date until we find out who the DISTRIBUTOR
is for Telemart. Any volunteers to get this information? Anyone?
 Anyone?

Okay, okay, *I'll* do it :-)

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Hi Everyone!

OK, by popular demand, here it is. A few of you have been having
problems with Links 386 Pro from Access Software and your GUS. The
following is something that I put together about 2 weeks ago and had
the technical manager from Access check over. I would have posted it
sooner, but I had to figure out how to do it (short of typing it out),
and I got some much needed help yesterday. Thanks to DDA. Sorry
about the formating - the document was prepared on my mac at the
office in a proportional font and probably won't look too well by the
time you get it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Links 386 Pro (Access Software)
UltraSound Setup

Version
You must be using Links 386 Pro version 1.05 or newer. Version 1.05
fixes some with the sound. To find out your version #, type LINKS386 /V
from the directory. Version 1.05 can be found on most bulletin board
systems by calling Access Software Directly (1-800-793-8324).

Memory
Links 386 Pro comes with it's own memory manager. Access Software
does not using QEMM with Links 386 Pro. It has been our experience
that Links 386 Pro works best without any expanded memory driver, including
EMM386.EXE. Conclusion: Don't use EMM386.EXE (or any other expanded memory
driver)!

According to Access Software, you must use the HIMEM.SYS driver that
comes with 5.0 (not the one that comes with Windows 3.1). If you use the
driver that comes with Windows 3.1, then Links will probably crash.

Links Configuration
Once you have your computer's memory set up as above, and you have
installed Links 386 Pro version 1.05, you are ready to begin. You must delete
the configuration file in the LINKS386 subdirectory called LINKS386.CFG.

SBOS
Because Links 386 Pro "looks for" a specific version of the Sound
Blaster card, you must run SBOS with the -X2 option. Example: SBOS -X2

Running Links
Links must be run with the /S option, which eliminates possible device
conflicts with sound cards. Example: LINKS386 /S or GOLF /S.

You should then go to the "Options" menu and select "Sound Options."
Choose the Sound Blaster option. At this point, Links should set up
(by itself) for DMA channel 1, and interrupt 7. You should change
this to whatever is listed for the "I" option in your SET BLASTER=
line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, usually 5.

Try "pressing" the TEST SOUND button on the screen. You should hear
sound. Try several to make sure your system is set up correctly.

Whew! You should now have your Links 386 Pro working. Enjoy.

Chris

I should make some new patches available next week by ftp.
Probably on wuarchive.
Some of the instruments: Hammond B3, TR808, some analog synths...

Also, i give some pointers for the second time since some people who had
requested them didn't get the first week of digest.

-Csound is available from cecelia.media-lab.mit.edu for Unix and documentation
in PS and Word format. DOS executable can be found on ftp.bath.uk
Csound is the program i have used to generate some 16 bit instruments.
-I have not received the correspondance of DX7 patch maps, so i have not done
a DX-7 patch -> Csound orc file yet.
-Sox is a format converter that can exchange between almost any sound formats.
A good tool. Can be found on wuarchive.
-No i have not been able to succesfully use a home made cable with the Gravis.

And now for the main point: i am tired to receive hate mail, flames, rude
comments etc... so i guess it will be a long time before i post anything else
on the ultrasound list.

Bien a vous,

I thought, for those of you who ordered from them, I'd give the latest
poop on Disk-Count Software. I called them a couple of weeks ago and
asked when they'd get the GUS, when they'd ship, etc. The gave me some
sob story about how the FCC had not yet approved the GUS, to which I
responded that there were people in the USA who already *had* the card.
They didn't believe me, but the addresses of people who posted in
comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard made me think they were lying. So I got on
their case about it.

Yesterday I called back, and they said the FCC *had* approved it but that
Gravis had discovered a software problem (probably the Windows driver from
what I've read) and were fixing that and that they (Disk-Count) were supposed
to get their shipments yesterday (Nov. 5) but that they hadn't gotten them
yet (I called at noon). If they aren't lying, some of us might see the card
by Saturday, but at this point I'm not holding my breath. For one, they
might be lying. Two, they had about three shipments worth of orders the
last time I called (I have no idea where I am on the list). But they
said they were talking with Gravis about when they'd get the card.

I have decided that I am going to call again on Monday (although it will
take all the self control I have to wait until then!) and ask if they got
their shipments, if not, when they expect to get it, and where I am on the
list. Then I'm gonna call Gravis and ask them, because I think somebody is
lying to someone and I wanna get to the bottom of this, dammit!

And someone is going to lose my business if I find out they've been
jerking my chain!!! Grrrrrr....

I'll mail a followup here next week. On to the other note I saw!

I am just wondering, how many of the GUS owners out there is having
problems with sounds in Win 3.1 after loading SBOS, and how many doesn't
have a problem at all?

For example, if you set up your Win 3.1 so that when you start Windows
it plays a sound, and when you exit Windows it plays a sound (.wav
file), are you able to first load SBOS (then you can unload SBOS if you
want to with the -f option. As long as you have loaded SBOS without
rebooting before running Windows) then run Windows and exit Windows with
the sounds playing ok? Or do you get garbage?

When I first heard about the ultrasound i was very excited and willing to pay
the $200 price that i first heard on compuserve. after looking more closely
at the specs of the card and all of the problems that it has with various
hardware/software componets i have decided not to purchase an ultrasound and
wait for gravis to come out with a new version. the instability of any
product greatly effects my decision to spend even the least amount of money
on it. i believe that the ultrasound is a superior product and will play a major
role in the pc sound revolution that has already been started. in order to
be sucessful it must not only out perform its competion (which ive heard it
does but only if you can get the thing running) but it also must fully support
the current standard (SB). this is the reason that owners of os/2 (i am not
one) are desperate to get the ultrasound running for their systems. they have
moved to a superior operating system that fully (well windows support is not
fully compatiable but that will be solved in v.2.1) compatible with the
current standards. Gravis still has a lot of work to do on the Ultrasound.
ill wait until they are finished.

What the hell are you talking about?

If you are implying that cakewalk demo is not there, then learn how to use ftp.
If you are trying to be rude, you have the perfect way of doing it.

No ciao,

Hi, everyone.

Ever since I heard from gravis that they are working on patch loader for
windows I've been wondering what that meant. Well, I just bought BCPP 3.1
and was fooling around with KBMIDI ( from PC Mag - which doesn't work with
GUS either ) source code and MM windows references, I found that MM windows
has support for synthesizers like GUS that loads patches as it needs and MM
windows also has 'Patch Cache' functions to support it. I don't know where it
caches to but anyway, I fixed ( tell it to load patches to cache before a
note is played ) it just a little bit and it WORKS now. It's not a fancy program or anything but it IS a good toy for GUS owners to play with different
instrument patches and so on, I think. However, I don't know whether it is
legal to post modified KBMIDI here so could someone please tell me if I can
post it here so everybody can have it ?

Subject: ULTRINIT.EXE hangs bus and serial mouse???

After rereading the GUS readme file for the n'th time, i noticed the
section concerning ULTRINIT.EXE. Ok... I'm not exactly sure what the
MIDI IRQ is used for, except SBOS emulation, but I put the program in
my AUTOEXEC.BAT. Just about the same day, i installed my brand new
Microsoft compatible serial mouse. It didn't work. The mouse cursor
was there, but no cursor movement was possible. To cut a long story
short, I spent about 20 hours with screwdrivers, technical reference
manuals, incorrect jumper settings, and PC parts lying everywhere,
to figure out why the mouse would work on only one of my two PCs.
After that I gave up, and reinstalled an old heap of a bus mouse. Now
that wouldn't work either!

I'm pretty sure I have figured it out now... If I run ULTRINIT.EXE
after MOUSE.COM, the mouse freezes. If I run ULTRINIT.EXE before
MOUSE.COM, the mouse driver outputs a screenfull of garbage, and
refuses to load. This is consistent for the following configurations:

Bus mouse IRQ 3, No COM2, No LPT2, ULTRASOUND=220,7,7,11,5
Bus mouse IRQ 5, No LPT2, No LPT1, ULTRASOUND=220,7,7,11,7
Serial Mouse COM2, No LPT2, ULTRASOUND=220,7,7,11,5
Serial Mouse COM2, No LPT1, ULTRASOUND=220,7,7,11,7
Serial Mouse COM1, No LPT2, ULTRASOUND=220,7,7,11,5
Serial Mouse COM1, No LPT1, ULTRASOUND=220,7,7,11,7

If I don't run ULTRINIT.EXE, the problem disappears. Running ULTRINIT.EXE
freezes the mouse (mice) immediately, and can not be cured by CTRL-ALT-DEL.
Running Windows, however, revives the mouse. I now think this is because
of loading the GUS driver, and not because of loading the Windows mouse
driver. Is there any way I can run ULTRINIT.EXE, and keep my mouse? What
are the consequences of never running ULTRINIT.EXE? (what ceases to work?)
Is this a problem with my machine(s) only???

I'll be back...
Christian
