Subject: 16 bit instruments for GUS. My sources.

Ok,

To reply to all the requests:

1- I managed to emulate some Yamaha DX-7 patches and produce some 16 bit
samples with a wave and music description tool. It's called Csound and can
be found on cecelia.media-lab.mit.edu. If you have access to a Unix machine
take the executables, sources, examples and doc from there. If you would
rather use it in a DOS (text) system, you'll have to get the executables
from bath.ac.uk and get the documentation, examples and tutor files from
cecelia. The doc is either in ps or in Macintosh Word 4.0. I managed to read
it with Word 2.0 for windows. If any of you have problems getting a working
package, email me.

2- Somebody also asked if he could use his dx7 patch dumps ( i suppose it's
the 4096 byte dump with 32 patches, 128 bytes/patches). Well, if i can get the
info on the format (ie byte 7:fmop1, 8:fmop2, 9: ... you get the idea) i'll
be able to do a program that translates these patches in Csound orc files.

3- Another asked if there were other sources of samples... Well there are
several other wave generators. You'll have to dig for them. One of *my*
source is an EPS16+ keyboard. I've managed to extract EPS16+ Individual
Instrument Files from EPS16+ disks. I have not totally figured out the
IIF format (file type 3) but i'm working on it.

4- Yet another person wanted to know if he could hear the .pat with playfile.
No problem. Use playfile -16 -o1 name.pat
This is the minimum options. If you wanna skip the first header use -o335
instead of -o1. (the samples are on a odd offset, after a general patch header,
some pointers, and for each instruments if multisampled, there is a 96 bytes
additional header).
BTW, the .pat are from EYE&I prod. a company who does EPS-16+ samples disks.
Also, to play Csound samples use -h -s to generate raw 16 bit. Playback with:
playfile -2 -16 -o1 name.snd
Again, if you have any questions, dont be shy.

5- Haha. Now you are wondering: Will we be able to use some 16 bit samples as
patches? Well, not yet. I'm also working on finding the format. My HP 48s has
never been this busy! If any of you are also looking at this, email me.

6- Still there? Another person asked me after i replied on the -2 -16 etc...
options of playfile, if there was a way to make the change permanently. i.e.
to change signed int to unsigned int, ulaw to unsigned, 16 to 8 bits, 22050
to 11025, 44100 to 22050 etc... Good news for you: you can use SOX. Best
sound format exchanger. Support .wav, raw, signed, unsigned, 8, 16, 32,
floats, ulaw, alaw, aiff?, 8svx, voc etc... It's probably on wuarchive. Get
sox4e.

7- Not finished yet... If you have some disk dumps, instrument files or
other sysex dumps or whatever of samplers, get in touch... I'll try to
convert those also so we can have almost infinite quantity of quality patches.

8- As you can see we'll definitely need an FTP site! (I have megabytes of
EPS instruments that will be in GUS patch format in the near future, and all
PD).

9- Request for midi files: the site was posted two days ago. Please stop
requesting them from me...

Speaking of the devil: i tried to use the midi port... How am i supposed
to select it? I have Ultra and some SBP things defined ( how come SBPro
drivers are in midi mapper?). How can i select external midi connector?
Now, i know midi in doesn't work because Gravis said so, but what about
the midi out? Which brings to mind another point or two:

10- Midi cable. I have built one, but have not been able to test it yet.

11- Developper kit: i will receive one in the near future which means that
i wont be able to give any more informations on certain points... But i'll
finish the patch format, midi cable and anything that's important for you
before i get the kit, so it can be considered "publicly know information".
For the Unix driver, i'll have one in source form, but it will be licensed so
i'll be protected in regard to the non disclosure agreement (i talked to
Brad Craig, and he was very cooperative on that point).

Last, i have a question. Is Gravis saying that the windows driver is working??
If so, what's the latest version? My version doesn't respond to program
changes with any application with the exception of mediaplayer. And even with
mediaplayer, the sound is pretty fucked up... (Yes i erased everything,
reinstalled and moved the file as said in the readme. But nothing different...)

Did i forgot something? Remind me if i did...

Ciao,
